We convince ourselves it’s safer to keep the peace, to bite our tongue, to push it all down, and to swallow it and keep moving forward.
We tell ourselves we’re “strong” for bottling it up, but over time, silence starts to feel like a prison.
The more you hold it in, the heavier it gets, and the more disconnected you feel, not just from others, but from yourself.
When you never say what you need to say, you teach yourself that your feelings don’t matter. That you don’t matter.
And that kind of quiet hurt can leak into everything: your health, your confidence, your relationships, your performance at work, and your ability to feel joy.
The Neuroscience of Staying Silent: Why Bottling It Up Backfires
